Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish Renaissance mathematician and is considered the father of modern astronomy. He discovered that the sun was at the center of our solar system, not the Earth (known as the heliocentric theory.) He also discovered that the Earth rotates on an axis. He made these observations using nothing but the naked eye, as the telescope had not been invented yet. Today marks what would have been the 540th birthday of Copernicus. 1473-1543
