Thomas Culpepper was an ambitious, handsome young courtier who became involved with Queen Catherine Howard. Once he was arrested, he tried to shift all the blame onto her. It seems likely that he pursued her since Henry was a sick old man and likely to die soon. Once that happened, he could then marry the widowed Queen. Thomas was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, along with Francis Dereham but was beheaded instead. [photo from The Tudors]

1652  Irish exported as slaves to the West Indies    After putting down rebellions in several Irish towns, Oliver Cromwell orders that thousands of Irish men and women are to be involuntarily "transported" as labourers to the West Indies.
