A nanographene molecule exhibiting carbon-carbon bonds of different length and bond order imaged by noncontact atomic force microscopy using a carbon monoxide functionalized tip. Image originally created by IBM Corporation
The cancer cell's pink mitochondria and gold endoplasmic reticulum--a network of vesicles and sacs--swirl around a dark nucleus. The rendering was awarded an honorable mention in the illustration category of the 2008 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge. Donald Bliss and Sriram Subramaniam of the National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine created the image by "sandblasting" the cell with ions of the element gallium.
The Great Story III An animal cell, a eukaryote. Before the electron microscope, the complexity of subtle structures within the cell was not known. Now we are only beginning to appreciate the complexity of sub-cellular anatomy and physiology!
Looking uncannily like a collection of sushi, in fact this is a closeup of Smallpox viruses. The virus consists of genetic material (red), DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), enclosed by a protein capsid (coat, yellow)
