The Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium became the 104th Test venue in the world in December 2010. It's up in the hills outside Kandy, which is a beautiful city itself. It’s tea plantation country, and the stadium is surrounded by gentle hills covered in lush green trees, which run away as far as the horizon. The ground itself has grass banks on either side, for the spectators to sprawl on.
Girls' cricket Since 2005, 800,000 girls in state schools have played cricket thanks to Chance to Shine. We’re also successfully encouraging girls to join their local cricket club – 4,000 moved on from schools to clubs last year alone. All our projects now have either a dedicated girls’ section or are developing one. "The girls at St Margaret’s don’t want to become the tea-making ladies of the future, " says headteacher Andrew Black, "They want to be the players."
