Treblinka. Built for no other purpose than as a human slaughterhouse, Treblinka is one of the most horrific sites on the face of the Earth.  Existing as an extermination camp only from spring 1942 to winter 1943, an estimated 800,000 Jewish men, women and children - stripped, shorn of hair, confused and terrified - were herded through a pathway called Himmelfahrtstraße (The Road to Heaven) and into gas chambers to be killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sachsenhausen concentration camp had operated since 1936 as punishment facility rather than an extermination site. About 30,000 people are believed to had died there from overwork, ill-treatment and malnutrition, although a proportion were put to death by shooting, hanging and, in later years, a gas chamber.
