Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty, Arizona 1977. Tobacco bag. The subject matter is more ironic than it appears. A warrior is shown parading in the tradition of victory dancing. The warrior in full regalia, decorated with eagle feathers, while the horse prances with pride, but the American flag is displayed up side down. An international signal of distress adopted by the American Indian Movement as an emblem of protest. This was Joyce’s personal statement of protest.
