Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932) was a Brazilian aviation pioneer who spent most of his adult life in Paris. He designed and flew the first practical dirigible winning a prestigious prize on 19 October 1901 flying around the Eiffel Tower. He constructed a heavier-than-air aircraft that he flew on 23 October 1906, the first such flight in Europe. In Brazil he is a national hero credited as the father of aviation.
