Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying and occasionally devastating process, preceded by test prep, tutors, all sorts of stratagems, all kinds of rankings, and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say yes and which say no.
I really enjoyed this book. Working in a community college our clientele is NOTHING like the students applying to ivy league colleges. However, the parents have many similarities. This is a long book. Many in my book club felt the author went on a bit. I hung on every word. Great imagery. I was very empathetic to Portia's plight. She just wanted to help all of the students become the student's they want to be. I want my clients to understand, care for and own their education.
