The Kitchen House. JDR Note: OMG, I loved this book so much! A white indentured servant girl goes to live and work with the slaves on a Virginia plantation. The book follows the events of the next 19 years. It is tragic and parts of it will turn your stomach but there are equally uplifting doses of dignity, loyalty, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Every once in a while I’ll stumble upon a new-to-me author and feel immediately compelled to read everything they’ve ever written—preferably before the week is over. These 5 female authors write books that are compulsively readable and hugely enjoyable. Add them to your to-read list!
