On May 31, 1931, The Birmingham Airport was dedicated with fanfare and the greatest air show the city had ever seen. The new facility brought about service from American Airways in 1931 and Eastern Airlines in 1934. By 1939 air traffic in Birmingham was heavy enough to warrant the extension of the existing runway and the beginning of construction of a second one.
Love this postcard. It was a big treat in high school to drive out to the airport (this was the NEW one), go up to the observation deck and watch the planes take off. Clearly I didn't move in a fast crowd.
