This is probably my favourite Hopper painting. It could be a still from a film. What is the woman thinking? What has just happened? What is going to happen. The red curtains and the stairs beyond are ominous.
Down with Love (2003) is most celebrated for its style and cotton-candy depiction of a pre-sexual revolution era. Its set designs are “deliberately fake” and meant to look not like early-sixties New York but, rather, a Hollywood version of early-sixties New York. Color and scale are exaggerated with the intent of making design a larger-than-life character in the film.
2010's Kick Ass turned out to be a little gem of a movie. The villain's New York apartment was also a gem. The Kubus sofa by Joseph Hoffman is a firm favorite on many movie sets. With it's cubist design and box stitched squares this sofa, along with the matching armchairs, it is a world classic.
