Louis Majorelle’s furniture received international acclaim at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle at which he showed furniture with landscape and flower designs described in marquetry (inlaid wood) or carved into polished, luxurious woods. The following year Majorelle was involved in the formation of the Ecole de Nancy (with Emile Gallé as president) to promote the role of the arts in industry and Nancy as a centre of production for Art Nouveau.
