Ferdinand Schörner (12 June 1892 – 2 July 1973) was a General and later Field Marshal in the German Army during World War II. Lieutenant Ferdinand Schoerner received the Pour le Mérite. He was one of 27 people to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. and one of the youngest German generals.  Schörner was a convinced Nazi and became infamous for his brutality. By the end of World War II he was Hitler's favorite commander.

Eleven members of his family fell in action during World War I, including his father and two of his uncles.  He was awarded the Pour le Mérite during World War I  (27 Aug 1918) and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during WWII.  He died from his wounds in a Berlin hospital on 3 December…

Generaloberst Georg Lindemann, commander of the 18. Armee, presents the Knight’s Cross to Major Alfons Rebane, commander of the Estnische Bataillon 658 (Estonian voluntary battalion 658). Rebane was the first Estonian to receive the Knight’s Cross and will become the most decorated and probably the most talented and charismatic Baltic soldier during WWII.
