CASTLES OF SPAIN - Castalla Castle, Alicante (Islamic origin, XI century). James I of Aragon took the castle from the Moors (1244). During the War of Independence two major military actions took place in Castalla. The First Battle of Castalla, which took place on 21 July 1812, was a major defeat for the Spanish army at the hands of the Napoleonic troops. However, the better-known Second Battle of Castalla on 13 April 1813 was a Spanish triumph over Marshal Suchet's French army.
