Jan Carew, African Guyanese author born in Agricola Village on the East Bank of the Demerara River in Guyana, South America. Agricola Village is one of more than 100 villages established by formerly enslaved Africans in Guyana beginning in 1840 after slavery was abolished on August 1, 1834. They pooled their money and bought abandoned plantations from the former slaveholders.
