Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. The Flag is Raised – Over the 4th Division Cemetery. Photographed by Gillespie, March 1945. U.S. Marine Corps photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
In this image provided by the U.S. Marine Corps, these U.S. Marine motion pictures, taken through the front slot of a Marine tank on Iwo Jima on March 3, 1945, show Marines advancing behind an armored vehicle as another American vehicle burns in the background.
Uncommon valor in a peaceful setting: this 4th Division Marine threatens the enemy even in death. His bayonet fixed and pointing in the direction of the enemy, he was killed by a sniper before he even got off the beach on D-day.
