I'm not a big Martha Stewart fan as a rule, but this recipe for Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes is the best I've tasted. I use shallots instead of onions for a milder flavor that goes really well with the nutmeg. If you don't have gruyere, just use whatever cheese you have on hand, it will still be good.
I used clear plastic dessert plates instead of melting beads. Color with sharpie markers, put them in the oven for a few minutes until they flatten. Put something on top to keep them from curling. I used two knives.
