Pileated Woodpecker Pileated Woodpeckers are tall birds. Pileated means crested, which is the large red feather spike on top of its head. Most of its food includes tree insects like carpenter ants and beetles. This one was busy feeding in a tree covered with spanish moss (they look like curly plant tendrils). Spanish moss doesn't kill the tree. It is an air plant, getting its food from the air.
