Kente cloth was develoed by the Akan people of West Africa.  Many of Akan live in Ghana and Ivory Coast today. Traditionally the cloths were for sacred and royal occassions. They feature bold designs and bright colors, each of which bears meaning. For example, black signifies maturity and strong spiritual energy.

The Generation Festival, Ivory Coast, marks passage from childhood into adulthood. Participants are in their late 20s to early 30s. After going through ritual, men & women have right to speak in village meetings and function as an adult in Ebrié society. All members of generation will begin participating in social engagements after festival celebration. People who participated & added to village register have right to lay claim to land or other resources distributed to village as a whole.
