28 Books That Affirm Black Boys. A good list to check out, especially in the 8-12 chapter book range. I can't remember a single chapter book series (Hardy Boys, Beverly Cleary, Great Brain, etc.) I read at this age that had a black lead character - finding a couple good ones to throw into the mix would be great.
