July 9, 1793: The first legislative session of Upper Canada (the part of British North America that would go on to become Ontario) passes the Act Against Slavery. The law stated that while all slaves currently in the province would remain enslaved until death, no new slaves could be brought into Upper Canada. It was the first British colony to enact such a law.
