The 50mm mortar was a German infantry weapon during WW2. Developed in 1936 it was unique in that it required the operator to pull a trigger to fire. The range was not that far but it was better than a hand grenade. This weapon was desirable because it was easily man portable. About 600,000 were made, but by 1942 it was relegated to a defensive role as 90mm and 120mm mortars (mostly captured from the Russians) became more useful.
WW2 German Infantry weapon called the Schmiesser./ The MP40 was unique in many ways. First, it could only shoot full auto, not semi-auto. Also, it was mostly stamped steel making it quick and cheap to manufacture. The stock was originally wood but eventually was made out of pressed bakelite. The hook on the barrel was so it could fire out of armored vehicle ports without riding up. The MP40 used 9mm pistol ammo and jammed. This gun changed infantry tactics forever.
Although the Germans had the best machine guns in the world during WW2 their rifle design was obsolete vs the American and Russian semiautos. They finally delivered the Gewehr43 semiautomatic rifle with a 10 round magazine in 1944. It came too late to affect the outcome, but it had a major impact on many Eastern Front battles. 500,000 were made. At first it was a terrible weapon but was rapidly improved and temorarily helped Germany make up for its insurmountable loss of manpower.
Fuel Air Bombs are the most destructive non-nuclear bombs. Thermobaric Devices are now more powerful than some nuclear weapons. Variations used by the Russians in Chechnya included RPG versions. Fuel air bombs have 2 explosives, one explodes a cloud of aluminum or magnesium powder: the 2nd explodes the cloud. It is particularly destructive to human tissue and hardened structures. The US MLRS can destroy 30 square miles in a single salvo and have been used in Iraq and Afghanistan on caves.
Awesome sign....used to warn people not to wander into the minefields!
Boston Dynamics and DARPA (US Dept of Defense) have introduced this new robot. It is six feet high and weighs 300 pounds. it is designed to help out in disasters or help soldiers carry heavy gear. It can move heavy objects blocking a path or lift rubble. It can climb over obstacles using hands and feet and is impervious to hazardous chemicals.
The M1 Garand was the American rifle used primarily during WW2 and was far and away the best rifle in the world at the time. Introduced in 1934 after more than 10 years of trial, it was an instant success. it holds an 8 round magazine of powerful .30-06 bullets, selected by Douglas MacArthur because the army had billions of rounds in stock. The weapon was obsolete by 1950 but was not phased out completely until 1976. Variants include the M14, BM59 and Ruger Mini-14.
