Clayton Moore played the Lone Ranger in the tv series 1949-1957, and Tonto was the Indian who saved him in the opening storyline. Jay Silverheels was a real Mohawk indian from Ontario Canada and played Tonto.  Both men capitalized on the popularity of their character for many years making personal appearances and taking up causes they felt were important.
