This section of the Bankhead Highway passed by Arlington Downs in Arlington, Texas. Banked Highway crossed the United States from Washington D.C. to San Diego, California. This first transcontinental highway include approximately 850 miles that crossed Texas.
The picture (circa 1937) is of the infamous Chicken Ranch in La Grange which was both legendary and one of the oldest in Texas. The questionable business operated for more than 130 years. It was immortalized first in the musical, "Best Little Whore House in Texas and later in the movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton.
In the 1800s, the Wichita Falls, Texas area was home to the Wichita Indians. A small waterfall near their village is thought to be the origin of the city’s name. A life-sized sculpture by local artist Jack Stevens depicts the legend, telling how an Indian brave sent his squaw into the river to find a shallow place to cross. When she said “wee chi tah” meaning “waist deep” – she had found the best spot.
