1944 - 1945. Men with hand carts full of food on a country road near Amsterdam. During the Winter of 1944-1945 Dutch rail workers went on strike to stop the Germans, who then punished them by putting a hold on all maritime transport. This cut off all food and fuel delivery. More than 20,000 people lost their lives in Amsterdam and the western part of the Netherlands during the winter of 1944-1945. Photo Boris Kowadlo #amsterdam #wordwar2
Zelden Van Passe Poldermolen by Stompwijk -Possibly the inspiration for the Winged Watchman. Located in Zoeterwoude, where the story takes place, and of the same style - a grondzeiler, or smock mill - as the Winged Watchman.
