32-STORY WINDSOR BUILDING FIRE, MADRID (Spain) caused the collapse of the top floor spans surrounding the still-standing core structure of the 10 uppermost floors. At its peak, the fire, which burned for almost a day, completely engulfed the upper 10 stories. More than 100 firefighters prevented the uncontrollable blaze from spreading. As is the case since 9/11, fears of total building collapse were widely reported. Those fears, thankfully, proved unfounded. -- February 12, 2005
