"Forts Sumter & Johnson, March 15, 1864" (Conrad Wise Chapman, 1864, oil on canvas). C.W. Chapman was a C.S. war artist, and soldier, commissioned by General P.G.T. Beauregard, to paint a number of scenes of Charleston, SC, which was besieged by sea for most of the WBTS. A later note by Chapman (1898) says: “Shows mail boat going from one fort to the other. A good view of Fort Moultrie can be had from this point. A shell would be thrown over the fort about every five minutes.”
