Earl Big Wig! Admiral Edward Russell (1652–1727), 1st Earl of Orford, 1710, by Godfrey Kneller. In 1692 Russell commanded the Anglo-Dutch fleet at the five-day Battle of Barfleur and the destruction of the French fleet at La Hogue following the action, thus halting Louis IV’s invasion plans.
Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland: Known as Lady Castlemaine, was an English courtesan and perhaps the most notorious of the many mistresses of King Charles II of England, by whom she had five children, all of whom were acknowledged and subsequently ennobled. Her influence was so great that she has been referred to as "The Uncrowned Queen."
