Man’s embroidered silk vest, 1853. This beautifully embroidered fabric was executed in Canton, China and purchased there in 1851 by Louis Manigault (1828-1899) while he was traveling around the world. It was made in to a ball and dinner vest in Charleston. The lining fabric bears the Manigault name in Chinese characters. Charleston Museum.
