Alexander Morton (1844-1923) a contemporary of William Morris and a luminary of the Arts and Crafts movement established a factory at Killybeg in 1898 first as Alexander Morton and Co. making hand-made carpets. The business later changed its name to Donegal Carpets.
After Nevada became the 36th US State on October 31, 1864, a star needed to be added to the official US flag. As usual, the new 36 star flag was made effective on the next 4th of July, in this case, July 4, 1865. A 37th star was added effective July 4, 1867 to accommodate the addition of Nebraska. Some 36 star flags were produced prior to July 4, 1865 in anticipation of the change.
