During the Twelve Years’ Truce in the Eighty Years’ War (1598-1648) Gilles van Ledenberg was seen as a threat to the authority of the stadtholder, arrested and locked up. His prosecutor was a personal enemy and Van Ledenberg decided to commit suicide. His prosecutor was not amused.    They still convicted him, together with Van Oldenbarnevelt somewhere in May 1619. Van Ledenberg was sentenced to death and the sentence was executed posthumously. The coffin was left hanging for 21 days…
