While everyone in the Pacific Northwest cares deeply about reading and giving, I have to give a special shout out to a ring of towns (and their bookstores) that circle Seattle. From Yakima to Chelan to Shelton to Tacoma, and then up around to all the islands west of Seattle, you are awesome. As is, of course, that exquisite book city of Seattle. And the college towns are with it, too: Spokane, Pullman, Bellingham, Bend, Eugene, Portland, Boise, Missoula and Bozeman.

Here’s the first regional map, since someone asked: the great Great Lakes States! You remember, right? HOMES? Yes you do. We’re covered from one of my favorite places, Oswego, NY, to the thumb tip of Wisconsin to the UP to northern Minnesota. And rockin’ it from Ann Arbor to Milwaukee, Shaker Heights to Sheboygan. Got lots of bookseller friends in this area. Thank you for getting out ‘the vote.’

Hello Red Sox Nation! From the North End to Northampton, Newport to Norwich, you came through for World Book Night! (Let me know when you tire of the alliterations.) Tomorrow’s map? Yup. Portland to the Puget Sound.

Originally installed in 2010 for the Festival International des Jardins de Metis, the Jardin de la Connaissance (The Garden of Knowledge) is a labyrinth of books situated in the forests of Quebec. The designers, Rodney LaTourelle and Thilo Folkerts of 100 Landschaftsarchitektur, intended for the installation to slowly dissolve back into the surrounding landscape, dispersing millions of pages of human thought into nature.
