I always told the kids at Christmas to enjoy all the toys because we did't get many when I was a kid and we would take Mom's old spools and make toys. So about 25 years ago my oldest son (Jeff) made a spool family with Mom, Dad, and the four of us kids for me on Christmas along with a horse, dog, pig, and tractor. This past Christmas he gave me the barns to go with it. Ray (my dad)
My niece Jenna, now all grown up made this for me. It is one of my prized Christmas possession. It's made from wood thread spools, pipe cleaners, felt and rhinestones. I think it is the best Nativity ever. It came with a cardboard manger. My husband accommodations a few years ago.
