In 1720 Jean Baptist Le Moyne, also known as Sieur de Bienville ordered Adrien de Pauger to draw up plans for the new city. A year later Pauger had draw an eleven-by-seven block rectangle now known as the French Quarter, where the Chateau LeMoyne hotel now resides. Bienville named the city “La Nouvelle-Orleans” in honor of Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, the Prince of Regent France. During Bienville’s 3rd term as governor, New Orleans became the capital of French Louisiana in 1723.
