The Stepsister's Tale, Tracy Barrett. A retelling of Cinderella where nothing is what it seems. Jane is horrified when her mother remarries a man whose daughter has known nothing but the best her whole life. When a prince issues an invitation, the story departs dramatically from the original. Smart & original, this tale might just improve upon the classic.

Railsea by China Mieville. A fascinating, hyper-literate, steampunk-flavored retelling of Moby Dick, if instead of ships they used trains, and instead of a whale they were chasing a giant albino mole.
