Mrs. William Seward Webb (neé Lila O. Vanderbilt) costumed as a bee for the elaborate ball hosted by her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt, 26 March 1883. It was this ball that earned the entire Vanderbilt family a place on Mrs. Astor's 400 List of the New York's most socially elite.
