Schone Madonna. Wooden sculpture of the virgin and child from Bohemia c.1400, about 2' high. Recently sold at Sotheby's - such dynamism in what is usually a static, meditative subject. Is she just about to throw the orb in her left hand?
This charming painting by Sophonisba Anguissola of 1555 is of three sisters playing chess. The old servant appreciates the devastatingly smart move with which the older has defeated her younger sister, while the youngest can't contain her glee. I wouldn't want to play any of them! It could also be seen as a study of four ages of woman.
David guarding his flocks, a 15th century Siennese painting in a wonderful 16 sided frame. It's in Birmingham City Art Gallery. The beautiful city of Jerusalem (really Sienna) is in the background and David chats with a cherub.
