Garnet
For most people outside the gemstone and jewelry trade, Garnet is just the name for low priced red gemstone, assigned as January birthstone and 2nd anniversary of marriage. In fact, Garnet is not a single mineral, but at least six recognized families of related and cross-mixed garnet varieties in almost every color of the spectrum and price range for every budget. http://www.multicolour.com/garnet/

Heart-shaped Tsavorite weighing 8.7 cts which is priced at $2474 per carat. The difficulties related to the scarcity and procurement of Tsavorite have limited its viability on a commercial scale and it has never been available to mass marketers except in small sizes. Tsavorites are mainly found in Tanzania and Kenya where water for mining is seasonal, roads are in poor repair, fuel costs are high, and access to mining equipment and spare parts is limited.

A rare form of garnet with an unusually high index of refraction, which has always been highly desired by gemstone collectors and jewelry designers. It was introduced to the world about 200 years ago when it was discovered in in Spessart, Bavaria. And while in the gem trade the name Spessartite is more frequently use, a lot of people prefer to call it Mandarin garnet, because of it's color. And we can't blame them. Just look at this fiery orange Mandarin garnet cushion weighing 10.32 carat.

Rhodolite is the richest of the red garnets. Other red garnets like Almandite and Pyrope are rarely as attractive unless of course their chemistry inclines towards rhodolite. Rhodolite is sometimes available in large sizes and is probably the most affordable alternative to ruby, like this eye clean pear weighing 8.59 cts under $1000.

Early in 2016 some attractive purple garnets from East Africa began to distinguish themselves in the Bangkok market. They were identified as belonging to the pyrope-almandine solid solution series more commonly known as rhodolite garnet. Rhodolites are usually more reddish but many of these stones are actually purple especially in low light. Although the degree of color and the specific shades will always vary, many vendors refer to them as “Grape Garnets”.

Tsavorite garnet was first discovered in Tanzania in 1968, and was named after the Tsavo National Park by the promoters from Tiffany & Co. The national park is located near the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Although Tsavorite is the name usually associated with the darker green garnets, there is no universally accepted standard that designates which shade of green qualifies as tsavorite.
Spessartite
Mandarin Garnet is the trade name for Fanta colored spessartites as pictured. The Fanta color is considered to be the finest color for spessartite and the designation is relatively new dating from the discovery of pure orange material in Namibia around 1993. After that, some fine stones were unearthed in Nigeria and later some were also discovered on the Kenya-Tanzania border although few were clean.

An exceptional 11.98 carat cushion cut Spessartite (Mandarin garnet) from a new deposit in Mozambique. The exact origin/locality is unknown to us so far, but we were able to pick up a few other stones although none were as impressive as this one.

Compared to emeralds which are found in numerous localities, tsavorites are only found in East Africa. And, although large emeralds are never common, large tsavorites - even stones weighing over 2 carats are already considered to be a rarity. Yet, tsavorites which are less included, brighter, and not oiled or treated, are in general still less expensive than emeralds. Pictured 4 emeralds and 6 tsavorites. Can you tell the difference?
