"Industrial clogs probably for use in an iron and steel works – the flap prevented the molten metal penetrating the eyelet holes." At the Colne Valley Museum, Golcar, near Huddersfield.
"The burnishing iron was used to heat up the leather clog upper so it could be moulded into the shape of the foot. As can be seen these are both served by a gas pipe and until a few years ago the museum’s clog makers were still using them." At the Colne Valley Museum.

"James Critchley, whose shop was in Whit Lane, Pendleton, until it was demolished in 1965 supplied many who worked in the local coal mines. Clog wearing reached its peak about the turn of the twentieth century, but went rapidly out of fashion after the First World War."

"Women's suede and wood clogs. About 1943. During the Second World War restrictions came in to force on the use leather. To save the leather used for soles, wooden soled shoes were introduced in 1943. This pair were sold by Liberty's of London." Lace-up shoe clogs.
"Children's leather and wood clogs. Made in Lancashire, 1850s-80s. These clogs have a distinctive metal clasp fastening and iron ‘horseshoes’ attached to their soles and heels. Women and girls working in Northern textile mills normally wore traditional clasp clogs or bar strap clogs which became more popular in the beginning of the 20th century. Children’s clogs often had either ankle straps or bar straps." Typical clasp clogs with clog irons/caulkers on the soles.

The stamp on the clogs is clearly visible. The clogs were selected for the gallery to show the precarious lives of industrial Manchester’s workforce.

Just described as clogs, with an estimated date of 1963, these clogs with leather uppers and wooden soles were intended to look "Dutch".
Dance shoe worn by Will Judge, ca.1920s. Leather lace-up clogs, with wooden sole. Will Judge (1883-1960), The Norfolk Comedian, was as his title indicates, a well-known performer in East Anglia in the early 20th century, performing in variety and as a pantomime dame. Most comedians included song and dance in their acts and these clogs were used by Will Judge in his act.
Said to be part of a costume worn by Sammy Curtis in a theatrical production.

Per Bata Shoe Museum "wooden clogs called "Lapti" in Russian, but also known as postole. These styles of woven shoes are made of the inner bark of limewood or birch trees. Traditionally made throughout Scandinavia, the Baltic States and North-western Russia (Siberia), they were worn with thick woolen socks or wrapped stockings during all but the hottest and coldest of weather. Scandinavian, early 1940s."
The museum estimates that these were made in 1920, but they could be older. They are similar to a pair of "dandy" clogs in our collection, which are stamped "P. BUCK" (possibly made by Peter Buck).
Many of these clogs were brought to Canada via Irish, Scottish, and British immigrants. The style was also brought to the US and 19th century shoemakers in both countries also made this form of footwear locally. The preponderance of children’s examples in North America, including this one, suggest that some were made, or sold, as mementos of ‘home’ but some many also show evidence of wear.

Bata Shoe Museum

'Rocking Horse Ballerina' by Vivienne Westwood. The shoes with wooden platform soles were designed by Westwood to complement the mini-crini designed in the mid 1980s. Known as Rocking horse shoes, Westwood recalled 'I wanted these little childish shoes, like sandals but a bit like clogs. They had to have a little platform- they rocked a bit. They were important in the collection'.
Pair of clogs made by Arthur Wilkinson (1946). Pair of clogs with dark brown leather uppers. Squared off pointed toes and covered tongue with the quarter extending into a strap fastening over the top of the vamp with small metal buckles. Carved, shaped wooden soles with short heel. There is an iron strip nailed around the edge of the soles and the back of the heels and a metal toetin cap over the toes. The clogs are unlined and have no inner soles.
Pair of child's clogs featuring round toe and wooden heel. The clogs consist of 2 part leather uppers, unlined, with pointed tongue beneath latchets fastened by worked [brass] clips. The sole and heel are cut in one piece and feature a rebate along the top edge for the attachment of the uppers with brass tacks. Irons are attached to the bottom of the sole and heel. (Said to be made in NSW, Australia.)

This appears to be a three-buckle Baltic clog crossed with a Brewer's clog, and more weight added.

"The new [in 2015] exhibition in the popular Community Gallery features the work of Alban Snape. Alban spent most of his working life as a clogger and the exhibition features a mixture of manufacturing history and autobiography. Clogs were among the best ways for working people to keep their feet dry, and they were very long lasting. Alban worked as a clogger from 1946 to 1990."
