Religious Heritage of Le Marche, Italy

The Marche region offers an extraordinary number of sites of great spirituality, containing 200 churches of mainly Romanesque architecture, monasteries, 90 abbeys and 183 shrines. It is the home of Loreto, one of Europe's greatest catholic shrines and Italy's second most important pilgrimage site after Rome attracting more than 4 million pilgrims every year. The Marche region is also the birthplace of ten Popes from Pope John XVIII (1003-1009) to Pius IX (1846-1878).
