Gaspare Luigi Pacifico Spontini (14 November 1774 – 24 January 1851) Gaspare Luigi Pacifico Spontini, composer and conductor, was extremely successful in mid life, and was considered one of the greatest Italian composers of his age. He represented the Napoleonic cultural ideal in music, but he fell out of favour and died disillusioned and depressed in his native Maiolati, now known as Maiolati Spontini.

Beniamino Gigli (1890-1957) was an Italian opera singer. The most famous tenor of his generation, he was renowned internationally for the great beauty of his voice and the soundness of his vocal technique. He was the foremost Italian tenor of the 1920s through the 1940s, had of a smooth, lush voice with a lyric sweetness. He became a Metropolitan Opera star, singing 28 roles there, and was an heir to the tenor Enrico Caruso, who had died at the beginning of the 1920s.
