The history of this beautiful, fertile region can be traced back to Paleolithic times with many stone tools having been found dating from as long ago as 900 B.C. The earliest history that can be established is the presence of the Picentes a pre-Roman, unique civilisation who was present in the area from the iron age (1200-400 b.C.) up to the time when Roman domination became firmly established in the 1st century b.C. The region boasts 37 archaeological sites and 7 archaeological parks.
