Val di Funes, South Tyrol, Italy
Val di Funes, South Tyrol, Italy Val di Funes is a picturesque valley located in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy. It's renowned for its stunning natural beauty, charming villages and the dramatic backdrop of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Val di Funes is situated in the larger region of South Tyrol, which is part of the Eastern Alps. The Dolomites, a sub-range of the Alps, are the mountain range that surrounds Val di Funes and is known for its unique and iconic limestone peaks. In our image, that line of sawtooth summits rise high above Santa Maddalena, a small village of traditional Tyrol architecture with a setting that might be called the peak of picturesque.
Lake Federa and Becco di Mezzodì mountain, Dolomites, Alps, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Belluno, Italy
Becco di Mezzodi, Italy The northern Italian resort town of Cortina d'Ampezzo boasts a brace of impressive mountains as a backdrop, and perhaps the most beautiful is the serrated peak of Becco di Mezzodi. A part of the Croda da Lago chain in the central Dolomites, it makes a looking glass out of Lake Federa in our image. The mountain is called 'Midday Peak' locally because around noon in Cortina, the sun sits right above its summit. In summer, hang gliders and BASE jumpers love to throw themselves from Becco di Mezzodi and the Croda range. During the winter, it's good to simply enjoy the frosted view.

Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy
© Alfonso Della Corte / Sime / eStock Photo The most iconic part of this celebrated and historic square of mostly mediaeval architecture in Pisa is a certain slightly off-kilter tower. But our image's perspective of Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) was taken near the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and showcases the rest of the complex, including three magnificent structures: the elegant Pisa Baptistery, the solemn Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) and – closest to us – the back portion of the mediaeval Pisa Cathedral. The cathedral is clad in grey marble and its front entrance fitted with three immense main doors. The entire square's UNESCO World Heritage Site status, bestowed in 1987, ensures its enduring legacy.
