Tanjore paintings are traditional Tamil artworks dating back to 1600 C.E. Nayaks of Thanjavur were the chief patrons of this art. They have a rich gold work with semiprecious / precious stones, vibrant colors a devotional composition. The themes are ltd to Hindu gods, goddesses saints. Large composition have a central figure episodes from Hindu mythology around that central deity. Also referred as “palagai padam” (palagai – wood, padam – picture) as they are made in solid wooden planks.
