African giraffes were among the most priced items presented to Nile Valley royals and kept for prestige. They were also captured and hunted for their hides and skin from the green Sahara period until the African middle ages where the giraffe trade came at a climax in the 1400s where African giraffes were sold as far as China during the Ming Dynasty. Of all the animals given to the Chinese were then exotic, but the giraffes were particularly special due to its connection with Confucian tradition.

The original was burned during the French Revolution but this is a reconstruction based on the numerous famous illustrations of perhaps the most powerful Vierge in France. She was very likely the model for many of the Vierges Romanes and was the most famous of the Black Madonnas. In Le Puy she has the place of honor on the altar of the Cathedrale.
