Britain from above: 12 glorious views from the sky Arbor Low, Derbyshire All but a couple of thousand years of Britain’s 12,000 years of continuous occupation are ‘prehistoric’ and have no written records. So archaeologists have to read the landscapes. We still don’t know the meaning of stone circles and henges. But Arbor Low is doubly mysterious for being a stone circle set within a henge. Oops!
Silbury Hill in Avebury, Wiltshire is the largest man-made mound in Europe, it compares in height and volume to the roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Though mysteriously important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown. There is no access to the hill itself. It is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. Stonehenge is 16 miles away.
