In 1991 I was given this gift by my parents. They had commissioned a local artist to reproduce Malcolm's Cuthbert Orde sketch in colour.
Hawker Hurricane Mk I LE*S of 242. Sqn - pilot P/O Noel Karl STANSFIELD, a Canadian who during the Battle of Britain flew with 242. and 229. Sqns. He achieved 7 kills during the Battle. P/O Stansfield was shot down and wounded on 30 September 1940. He baled out his Hurricane I sn N2652 after combat with a Bf 109s over Ightham. He was awarded the D.F.C. on 8 October 1940.
On 21 September 1940, the pilots of No 1 Squadron RCAF participated in the first wing formation operation from RAF Northolt, including Nos 229 and 303 Squadrons RAF, although no enemy aircraft were encountered. Through a communications foul-up, the units took off simultaneously from different corners of the airfield, while all pilots headed toward the centre. By 27 September, the Canadians had destroyed 7 enemy bombers, but had only 6 Hurricane Mk I fighters remaining operational.

G/C Stanley F Vincent returned to RAF Northolt on 14 January 1940, as station commander. Aged 43 and a veteran of the RFC, he often accompanied his pilots on scrambles, claiming 2 Me 109 fighters on 30 September while on an operational sortie with No 229 Squadron RAF. The score made him one of the few airmen to have destroyed enemy aircraft in the air in both wars.
During October 1940, P/O Victor MM "Vicky" Ortmans, Sgt John Arbuthnot, F/O Ronald E Bary, F/L John B Holderness, F/L John FF "Jack" Finnis (back row, left to right) Sgt Francis J "Frank" Twitchett, Sgt George F Silvester and Sgt Claude G Hodson (front row, left to right) of No 229 Squadron RAF found RAF Northolt camouflaged to resemble civil housing and gardens, with a stream painted across the main runway, ordered by 43-year-old station commander G/C Stanley F Vincent.
