Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-80), Mount Rainier Bay of Tacoma (1875). The second-generation Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford built a reputation as a master of light and atmosphere. An admirer of Turner since his boyhood, Gifford studied and copied the master’s work in London’s National Gallery and visited Turner’s champion, John Ruskin, to discuss his work.
