Andi Cross on Instagram: "This was the first time I’d ever seen a great white shark in the wild. She bit the cage tethers, disconnecting us from the boat. Because we were observing her from the surface, our regulators were not attached to our scuba kits, rather the boat. Needless to say, the banging you hear at the end of this clip was sounding the alarm, letting us know we needed to get out of the cage immediately. That night, when I closed my eyes, I couldn’t get the visual of her out of my head. There’s nothing quite like seeing a great white shark this close. They are one of the greatest animals on earth in every way. Never have I been more humbled and thankful to witness pure marine perfection up close. I think about this encounter a lot. I wonder when my next one will be. A new study led by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and published Tuesday in Nature found great white sharks leave their “preferred hunting ground” when orcas -- also known as killer whales -- enter it. What’s more, researchers found the sharks won’t return for roughly a year -- even if the orcas don’t stay that long.
