USS Yorktown CV-5 was commissioned on 30 September 1937 She took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea, where her aircraft participated in the sinking of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shoho and damaging Shōkaku. Yorktown was damaged, but returned to Pearl Harbour for repairs. At the Battle of Midway her aircraft sank Soryu and Hiryu. Yorktown was hit by 3 bombs and 2 torpedoes. While being made safe to take under tow, she was struck by two torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-168
